Family Fun Under the Gum Trees: 27 March – 9 May 2010
The diversity and beauty of eucalypts, Australia’s most iconic tree, will be celebrated this autumn during the Eucalypt Festival at the Australian Garden, Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne.
Bring your friends and family and enjoy a great range of fun walks, workshops, family experiences and kids’ activities during this uniquely Australian festival.
There will be activities available each day for everyone to enjoy during the Eucalypt Festival with some special event family days also being held during the school holidays, from 27 March – 11 April.
Native Wildlife Display with Australian Wildlife Lectures
Come along and meet the amazing animals that call the Australian bush home. Get up close to a snake, sneak a peak at a spider or learn about a lizard. Discover what makes these animals amazing. Sunday 4 and Monday 5 April. 10am – 3pm.
Special School Holiday Eucalypt Festival event days – 4th, 5th and 11th April
Visit the Australian Garden on these three special school holiday event days for a fabulous variety of activities for all the family.
Discover native wildlife displays, learn how to build a cubby house using natural materials, have your face painted, learn how to play a didgeridoo or marvel at the Frill necked lizard stilt walkers. Plus there’s lots more activities and fun for everyone!
Planting in the Australian Garden – special free event for families!
Be a part of the development of the second stage of the Australian Garden.
Join our horticulture team within the new Garden and plant a tree with your family, learning the best way to plant natives and making your mark on this exciting new development! Then pot-a-plant as a piece of the Australian Garden to take back for your home garden. Sunday 23 May. 11am – 12.30pm.
Gum Nut Fairies and Elves
Join our Fairy Guides on this amazing gum tree adventure as we zoom through the Australian Garden discovering what makes these remarkable trees so special.
With a flick of our wings and a swish of our wands, our senses come alive as we search for signs of gum nut fairies, then settle down amongst the gum trees for a magical fairy story and some fabulous fairy crafts.
But don’t forget to keep your eyes and ears open as we never quite know who or what we might find hiding in a gum tree!
Fairies and elves are encouraged to dress in their best fairy costume, suitable for the weather on the day. Suitable for children aged 2–5 years. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Monday 29 March; Thursday 1 & 8 April. 9.30 – 10.30am. $6.20 per child.
The Story of Gum Trees is the perfect way to learn more about this iconic Australia tree. Visitors will take part in a fascinating journey investigating the traditional uses, cultural significance and scientific importance of Eucalypts. The tour will finish with some delicious Australian damper, Eucalyptus honey and a cup of traditional Billy-tea. The tour runs every Tuesday from 2 – 3pm in the Australian Garden. Group bookings are also welcome. Great value at $18 per adult and $15.30 per child/concession (Australian Garden entry not included).
Bikes Birds and Bush Breakfast
Join an experienced guide on a journey around the RBG Cranbourne bushland by bicycle.
Enjoy the early morning bird calls, catch a glimpse of local wildlife and finish with a barbecue breakfast at the Woodland Picnic Area. An easy ride for the whole family.
Visitors meet their guide at the Stringybark Picnic Area. Please bring your own helmet and bike. Helmets are mandatory.

Twilight Highlights with a bush barbecue
Join us for a delicious bush barbecue before exploring the bushland of RBG Cranbourne at dusk with our experienced guides.
Look out for native wildlife as wombats, wallabies and possums emerge for the evening. Watch the sunset over Melbourne from Trig Point Lookout.
Bring along a torch and dress appropriately for the weather on the day.

An evening under the gums
Experience a night to remember in the spectacular surrounds of the Australian Garden. Enjoy a personalised guided tour of the Australian Garden with John Arnott, Manager of Horticulture at the Royal Botanic Gardens Cranbourne before enjoying a delicious two-course dinner in the delightful Tarnuk Room overlooking the garden. Hear from guest speakers Leon Costermans and Rodger Elliot who will take you on a journey of Australian plants and trees during dinner.
Saturday 8 May 5pm – 9pm.
